Snowy Doings

This past Thanksgiving weekend the lady and I hiked the Alpental trail up to Snow Lake with some friends. The lower, flatter part of the trail was nice and packed down making for pretty easy going. Once the trail started getting steeper we had to plow through switchbacks covered in the 7 inches of powder that fell the night before.

On the way down the mountain, we were able to slide on our feet from one switchback to another - sometimes sliding as much as thirty feet or so. It's been a while since I played in the snow like that.

Here we are toward the beginning of our hike.

Man with a Helmet-Cam

Many people who know me have probably already heard me talk about Lucas, his helmet cam, and the fact that he's arfin' nutso.

Lucas is a buddy from Boston who is fearless on a bike. He races in messenger events to capture the first-person footage, and it gets my blood pumping every time I watch it. Check out the Drag Race NYC vid for some hairy fixed riding.

Lucas is also famous for: riding the couch bike onto I-90, stealing bus drivers' coffee from their dash boards - whilst riding along side them, and monitoring police channels in order to best plot his course through the city.

Vintage Film from UW library

Long undeveloped vintage film reels from the University of Washington Allen Library vaults are now seeing the light of day.

Check out the video of a 1914 motorcycle race held in Tacoma WA. The first half is a little washed out, but notice everyone's delighted reaction to the camera toward the middle, and the racer lighting up a cigarette while astride his Indian just at the end. Neato.

For the curious, here's what the lady looks like in bee mode.

She also transforms into a racecar old-school VW bug.
